Hugo started riding with his brother, who was already a winning cyclist. When he challenged his brother by matching his pace, Hugo became a winning cyclist too.
How did you start racing?
I started by accompanying and supporting my brother, who was a winning cyclist and I thought that if we each had someone to train with, we could be two of the best.
How do you train for racing?
I follow a pre-defined plan created by my coach/trainer that’s tailored to the objectives and characteristics of each event.
What’s your riding style?
I don’t know how to define that ...maybe a little slow and a bit clumsy given my physical characteristics and the fact that I started competing at 22 years old.
What's been your best result?
11th in the 2017 Volta a Portugal

September 13, 2016, GP Mortágua
- after a difficult period, I decided that it would be the ideal race ... I left for the race determined. I went from the gun, when I felt that the race would be won in a break. My group accelerated the pace once more and I was struck by a ray of hope that I could catch the break if I went solo to bridge the gap. I passed them without stopping, determined! I suffered so much, so much ... I was riding faster only on fumes and I won! In the end I cried and thanked my family, friends and colleagues sharing that.
What do you do in your free time?
I like to be with family and friends and, when possible, I like to enjoy whatever the cyclist’s routine doesn’t allow.
